Leon County Invests $10K in Student-Athletes Following World Championships

Leon County is turning a global sporting event into a local win for student-athletes.
Leon County officials recently presented a $10,000 check to Leon County Schools at Montford Middle School, funded by proceeds from the 2026 World Athletics Cross Country Championships Fun Run held at Apalachee Regional Park. The investment will support cross country and track and field programs across the district, helping expand opportunities for students to compete and grow in the sport.
County Commission Chairman Christian Caban emphasized that the goal is to create lasting impact beyond the event itself, while County Administrator Vincent S. Long noted the importance of following through on commitments that directly benefit students.
Superintendent Rocky Hanna said the support will help students develop discipline, teamwork, and confidence through athletics. At Montford Middle School—home to the reigning district champion boys and girls cross country teams—Coach Brad Busboom added that the investment sends a clear message that the community believes in its young athletes.
The funding is part of a broader partnership with World Athletics aimed at growing cross country at the local level. Leon County Schools will determine how the money is distributed among its programs.
