A Rich History of Learning

Nestled amidst the picturesque landscapes of Tallahassee, the Leon County School District has been an integral part of our community since 1856 and has been officially accredited since 1914.

What started as the first public school opening in Woodville in 1856 has blossomed into a network of modern campuses, reflecting our commitment to providing exceptional educational opportunities for generations of students. Over the years, we've evolved in tandem with our community, adapting to meet the changing needs of our students while preserving the core values that have made us a pillar of educational excellence.

Sustainability is a core value for our district, and we strive to create a learning environment that promotes environmental responsibility for future generations.

The district has implemented a comprehensive program that includes a variety of initiatives. These include:

  • Implementing a robust recycling and composting program to reduce waste
  • Promoting the use of natural gas school buses for cleaner transportation

These efforts are not only benefiting the environment but also creating a more engaging learning experience for students. Through school gardens and outdoor classrooms, students are actively involved in understanding environmental issues and exploring sustainable solutions.

Our schools provide a vast range of academic offerings, with fully licensed and high-quality teachers, full ESE and ESOL support services, and exciting post-secondary pathways and articulations.
*Florida law does NOT mandate that other schools provide licensed classroom teachers or minimum curriculum standards.

We Have Community.
Our district boasts one of the highest percentages of parent volunteers in the state.

 

We Have Heart.
Leon County Schools recognizes the service and sacrifice of our fallen student-veterans at the historic Bloxham building with our Wall of Remembrance honoring those killed in combat since 1991 so that we never forget the sacrifices they have made on our behalf.

We Have History.
Our district's first schoolhouse was opened in Woodville in 1856. Leon High School was founded in 1871 and remains Florida's oldest continuously accredited high school and is a beloved local landmark.

We have a 94.5% avg stability rate - a testament to our dedicated teachers and motivated students who choose LCS for its reliability and stability in their education.
