Speech and Language Impaired

Every school in the district has at least one Speech-Language Pathologist on site to conduct observations, provide information to parents, consult with teachers, conduct evaluations, and provide interventions/therapy to students who have difficulties with speech, language and/or social communication skills.

Language is different from speech.

Language is made up of socially shared rules. Difficulties in this area include trouble understanding others or sharing thoughts, ideas, and feelings completely.

Speech is the verbal means of communicating. Speech consists of:

  • Articulation-how speech sounds are made
  • Voice-use of vocal folds and breathing to produce sound
  • Fluency-the rhythm of speech (e.g., hesitations or stuttering can affect fluency)
