Leon County Schools is excited to announce a new reading initiative for all students and staff. “Let’s put our own words to the test,” said Rocky Hanna, LCS Superintendent. “We tell students every day that growing as a reader is fundamental to their success for the rest of their lives. Well, instead of just telling them, why don’t we show it?”

From the students’ first day of school (August 11, 2026) to May 14, 2027, the ‘Read it YOUR way, Leon!’ reading challenge has a lofty goal of 27,000,000 minutes.

ALL reading counts—reading at school—reading at home—reading with family friends and family.  Simply log your minutes on Beanstack and keep your reading streak going!

  • All Leon County Schools students, employees, families, and community members are encouraged to participate in the Read It YOUR Way, LEON! year-long challenge to read 27 MILLION MINUTES by the end of SCHOOL YEAR 2027!  To make that an easier ‘bite of the apple’, there are 4 mini-challenges per year. The first of the 4 mini challenges is ROCKY READS! which closes on October 2,2026. Participants are encouraged to read for school AND whatever they choose for enjoyment. Minutes can be easily logged in Beanstack (a digital reading log that motivates and rewards students for reading), by teachers, students, and parents.EVERYONE has a GOAL of minutes for each challenge. LCS is looking for ALL students to read at least 1000 minutes this school year! 

  • Students, teachers, administrators, and staff are encouraged to log their minutes in Beanstack, which can be found on ClassLink. Everyone can earn badges and view their progress throughout the challenge by opening the Read it YOUR Way, LEON! challenge on the Beanstack Challenges page.   • All reading counts and participants are encouraged to read whatever interests them. Students and employees may check out a book from their school’s media center or from the main library or a branch in the LeRoy Collins public library system. Your local library not only has bound books available but also a vast collection of eBooks, audiobooks, and magazines available via Libby.   • Employees, especially teachers, are invited to promote Read It YOUR Way, LEON! to their students—all reading counts, including academic and independent reading during the school day. Teachers can easily log reading minutes for the entire class and help students reach their reading goals. In addition, employees can use bulletin board, the morning news show, shout-outs and other appropriate methods to promote Read It YOUR Way, LEON! and celebrate top readers.     Families can promote reading at home by reading with their child(ren), taking their child(ren) to their local library, discussing and asking questions about their child’s book, and competing against each other for the most minutes or books read.     Community members can promote Read It YOUR Way, LEON! through their social media platforms using #LeonREADS. Local business owners interested in promoting the challenge may contact their local school to show support or Kathleen Malloy, Coordinator, Instructional Mateirals and Media.
