Paraprofessionals are an important part of the school team, working alongside teachers and other staff to support students academically, socially, and throughout their school day. Whether you’re beginning your career in education or looking for a meaningful career change, this is an opportunity to make an impact every day while gaining valuable experience in our schools.

What Does a Paraprofessional Do?

As a paraprofessional, you’ll help create a supportive environment where students can learn, grow, and thrive. Responsibilities may include:

A teacher and a group of young children sit around a table, using sign language together.

  •  Provide academic and instructional support to students
  •  Provide appropriate supervision to ensure student safety and well-being
  •  Work collaboratively with teachers, school staff, and colleagues to support student success
  •  Provide intervention support in the classroom, in small groups, or through individualized assistance
  •  Assist students with personal care and physiological needs as appropriate
  •  Provide classroom coverage and support when needed
  •  Encourage student independence, engagement, and participation in the learning environment

Do You Qualify?

To be considered for a paraprofessional position, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

  • 60 completed college credit hours
  • Associate of Arts (A.A.) degree
  • Demonstrate mastery in reading and math by successfully completing the Paraprofessional Test

Wellness Supplement

Paraprofessionals who provide personal care services, including responsibilities such as toileting and diapering, may be eligible for a Wellness Supplement in recognition of these additional responsibilities.

Through our Teacher Apprenticeship Program, eligible Leon County Schools paraprofessionals have a pathway to earn a bachelor’s degree in Exceptional Student Education (ESE) at no cost while gaining valuable classroom experience.

This opportunity allows you to work in our schools, learn alongside experienced educators, earn your degree, and take the next step toward becoming a certified teacher.
