FDOE Assessments
K-12 Student Assessment
The Bureau of K-12 Assessment is responsible for all aspects of Florida's K-12 statewide student assessment programs, including developing, administering, scoring, and reporting the results for assessments aligned to Florida's academic standards, as well as assisting with the administration and reporting of several other K-12 student assessment programs. Services are provided both by Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) staff and through various contracts with assessment vendors. The primary goal of these assessments is to provide information about student learning in Florida, as required by Florida law (see Section 1008.22, Florida Statutes).

National and International Assessments (NAEP, PIRLS, PISA, and TIMSS)
National and state assessments enable us to know how well students are doing in a variety of subjects at different ages and grade levels. International assessments allow us the unique opportunity to benchmark our students' performance to the performance of students in other countries. Florida participates in several national (NAEP) and international (PIRLS, PISA, TIMSS) criterion-referenced surveys.

Florida Participation in NAEP and International Assessments
- In the State of Florida, participation in NAEP, TIMSS, PIRLS, and PISA is mandated by Section 1008.22(2), Florida Statutes. "The Commissioner of Education shall direct Florida school districts to participate in the administration of the National Assessment of Educational Progress, or similar national or international assessment program, both for the national sample and for any state-by-state comparison programs," and this information is to "be included in the annual report of the Commissioner of Education."
- NAEP is an important part of Florida’s assessment program because it provides a basis for comparing the knowledge and skills of Florida students with students in other states, and with the Nation as a whole.
- TIMSS, PIRLS, and PISA are an important part of Florida's assessment program because they provide a basis for comparing the knowledge and skills of Florida's students with students around the world, and the Nation as a whole.
- Individual student participation in the assessment is voluntary, and parents can choose to have their child not participate, as stipulated in the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (P.L. 107-110).
National Surveys
NAEP is the largest nationally representative and continuing assessment of what America's students know and can do in various subject areas. Since NAEP assessments are administered uniformly to all participating students using the same test booklets and identical procedures across the nation, NAEP results serve as a common metric for states and the urban districts that participate in the assessment. The NAEP program is divided into two groups of assessments: Main NAEP and Long-Term Trend NAEP.
