    Technology Vision Statement

Students Using a Chromebook Leon County Schools (LCS) mission is to ensure students graduate with the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to compete at the global level. To do this LCS must provide a competitive digital classroom learning environment that provides differentiated/ individualized instruction tailored to each student. The vision is to integrate technology into the curriculum for students, teachers and parents and at the same time extend the learning environment beyond the regular school day to support learning as an on-going process. Technology will support virtual learning and traditional classroom instruction to form a blended environment that will prepare students to be competitive as they enter the workplace or continue their education.

Implementation and upgrade to a Digital Learning Environment.

It is our goal to provide a digital learning environment for our students, teachers, staff, and parents. The approach combines current technology with newer technology over time to create a dynamic learning environment. As technology changes it will be incorporated in our approach to provide digital classrooms in Leon County Schools. How the digital classroom looks today will not necessarily be how it looks tomorrow.

Student Mobile Learning Platform: Our goal is that each student has a mobile (“wifi”connected) device that will be used to support electronic textbooks, internet-based applications/content, collaborative learning, electronic submission of assignments/homework, interactive assessments for immediate feedback to teachers on lesson effectiveness, and data analysis systems that support individualized instruction. Our path to 1:1 began in the 2019-2020 school year with the purchase of 32,500 Chromebooks, the use of Classlink, and Canvas.

Digital Classroom: A digital classroom is equipped with interactive flat panel TVs for projection of content in the classroom and wireless connectivity for teacher and student devices. Each year, as funding permits, classrooms will be upgraded to this standard using Half Penny 2 funding until all classrooms have met this basic standard.

Upgrade/ Maintenance of core technologies to support a Digital Learning Environment.

The upgrade and maintenance of our common core technologies is essential to providing the necessary infrastructure to support our vision of a Digital Learning Environment.

Core Switches: Provides connectivity (wired) in the schools and with the District Data Center.

Wireless Connectivity: Provides wireless connectivity for schools and District administrative offices for all mobile devices.  In the 2020-2021 school year we completed upgrading our network infrastructure to support high density wireless in the classroom paving the way for 1:1, a long anticipated goal.

Central Shared Data Processing & Communications: Upgrade/replace/expand services for all schools and departments including enterprise processing capability, storage, communications, internet connectivity, collaboration software, backup systems for data and recovery, virtualization services, and server management. One host server per school hosting multiple guest servers to provide data files and print services, instructional learning system, on-line testing services required by the state, desktop management services used to image and manage the computers in the school, and cloud-based application services used to host the Student Information System.

Printers: Upgrade/replace printers and software/services to cost effectively manage printing at school sites.

Productivity& Communications Software: Upgrade/replacement of productivity (MS Office) and communications software (web, identity, and network communications) to support district users.
