Privacy of Student Records

The School Board of Leon County, Florida, is responsible for protecting the confidential records of its students. Several laws, regulations, rules, statutes, and policies guide our actions related to student records. The district closely follows these policies to protect the privacy of educational records.
- The federal law that applies to student record information is the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act, 20 U.S.C. §1232g, and its implementing regulations (FERPA).
- Section 1002.22, Florida Statutes, requires a school district to comply with FERPA and gives the Florida Department of Education the authority to monitor school district's compliance with FERPA.
- School Board Policy 8330 outlines the school district’s procedures for managing student records. Section 119.071, Florida Statutes, provides for the general exemption from inspection or copying of public records for individuals who are eligible based on their professions.
- School Board Policy 8310, Public Records, addresses exemptions to requests for access to records.
- Chapter 39, Florida Statutes, and School Board Policy 5540 deal with legal access to records by the Department of Children and Family, Child Protective Investigators.

Public Records Requests

Florida has a very broad Public Records Law. Virtually all written communications to or from the School Board of Leon County, Florida, Personnel are public records available to the public and media upon request. E-mail sent or received on the LCSB system will be considered public and will only be withheld from disclosure if deemed confidential pursuant to State Law.
