The Purpose of Decision Trees as an Educational Tool
The LCS Elementary Math Decision Trees for Tiered Academic Support are intended to provide educators with guidance and a structure for decision-making and intervening action that can correspond to data suggesting varying levels of academic deficit in student performance.
Current Law Regarding Academic Support for Math Deficiency
In the Spring 2023 legislative session, Florida Statute 1008.25 regarding the statewide student progression and the coordinated screening and progress monitoring system, was revised to include a requirement for providing remedial and supplemental support to students in grades K-4 for demonstrating substantial deficiency in mathematics or the characteristics of dyscalculia. One result of this legislation includes the authorization for the Florida Board of Education to designate criteria under which students who demonstrate deficiency in math must be covered by a federally required plan (such as an IEP, or Individualized Education Plan) that includes 1.) information on the student’s specific skill-based deficiencies, 2.) goals and benchmarks for student growth in mathematics, 3.) descriptions of the measures that will be used to measure student progress in mathematics, 4.) strategies, resources, and materials that will be provided to parents and students to support student progress in math, and 5.) any additional services deemed necessary and appropriate to accelerate student progress in math. This legislation goes on to prescribe required educator actions that must be taken to address substantial math deficiencies or characteristics of dyscalculia immediately upon the determination of such deficiencies or disability characteristics. The requirements for providing planning, monitoring, and implementation of such support shall remain in place for students until they demonstrate grade-level proficiency in mathematics. In August of 2023, the Florida Board of Education formally adopted State Board Rule 6A-6.0533, f.a.c., which outlines performance criteria for designating substantial math deficiencies and corresponding areas of emphasis in which deficiency or proficiency must be demonstrated.
