  • 8/23/16 STATEMENT: Pledge of Allegiance Non Participation

A change to Florida law this year requires all school districts to publish in the student code of conduct booklet the students’ right to not participate in reciting the pledge of allegiance. In complying with the change in law, our staff developed a form for parents to use to exercise that right. Superintendent Pons received several messages from the community in regards to this process and-- upon further inspection--made the decision to remove the form and revise the code of conduct booklet. We apologize for any confusion the form may have caused. We understand that approximately 400 paper copies were distributed before the superintendent stopped the process.

  • 9-26-14 STATEMENT: Alex DeFrank Arrest

Earlier this summer LCS had incidents of vandalism that occurred on the campuses of Chiles High School and Killearn Lakes Elementary School. These incidents occurred over night when no students or staff were present. These incidents quickly became part of a larger active criminal investigation. In mid-August, LCS was made aware of initial felony charges against a former Chiles student, Alex DeFrank—he was immediately expelled from Chiles at the start of the school year. LCS was informed that the investigation would continue into these incidents and this morning was made aware of the additional charges for Mr. DeFrank.
