Leon County Schools' athletics program offers numerous benefits to students, fostering a sense of belonging and pride within the school community. Successful athletic programs enhance school spirit among students, staff, and the broader community, with sporting events promoting cohesion by bringing people together. Participants in school sports are more likely to maintain an active lifestyle into adulthood and develop a lifelong passion for physical activity.

Regular physical activity significantly enhances cognitive function, improving concentration, memory, and overall academic performance due to the release of neurochemicals which are crucial for motivation, mood, attention, and learning (MDPI). Sports also teach students essential time management skills as they balance academic responsibilities with athletic commitments (Active Living Research). The discipline required for sports translates into better study habits and academic performance (BioMed Central).

Athletic programs support physical health by improving fitness, encouraging healthy habits, and developing motor skills. They also benefit mental and emotional well-being by reducing stress, boosting self-esteem, and fostering resilience. Social skills and teamwork are enhanced through collaboration, forming friendships, and practicing leadership. Additionally, sports instill a strong work ethic, fairness, respect for opponents, and perseverance. Integrating athletics into the school experience provides students with a well-rounded education that supports their physical, mental, social, and academic growth.

Athletic Requirements

  • Students interested in participating must have an updated physical and activity form on file.  These forms expire each year and must be submitted on the LCS Aktivate system (see above).
  • Students must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0.
  • Students must meet or exceed our behavior expectations to represent their school.
  • Students without current physicals or activity forms will NOT be allowed to participate in tryouts, practices, or competitions.
  • Students cannot attend field trips or extracurricular events without a parent/guardian's consent.
  • Physicals are good for one calendar year from the date administered and must be completed using only the current FHSAA Physical form.
  • Students may NOT participate in any athletics once their physical calendar year has expired.

Participation Information

Every student planning to participate in extracurricular activities must have a signed Activity Form. Activity Forms can be located on the new Leon Schools platform called Aktivate.

Field Trip Permission / Activity Forms

  • Hello! Every student planning to participate in extracurricular activities must have a signed Activity Form (just like in past years). What's different this year is that middle schools have their forms on a new Leon Schools platform called Aktivate.com.

How to use Akitivate.com to fill out your Activity Form

  1. Parents must create an account and add their student as an "athlete" (even if they're not playing a sport.)
  2. Once they are added as an athlete, they must start a new registration for their student (there's a blue button that says "New Registration +") and from the list of sports, choose the sport called "Field Trip."
  3. Once selected, the system will take you step-by-step through the Activity Form process, including e-signing the form and submitting it to the school.
