TRY THIS TODAY: Be a Secret Agent
Pretend you are a secret agent spying on the people who live with you. Try to learn something about each person that you did not already know. Here are some questions you can ask:
Are you an early bird or a night owl?
Can you whistle?
What makes you happy?
How do you like to relax?
What is your favorite movie?
Do you like to dance?
Do you like spiders?
Then think about this: Are you the same as this person in every way? If not, how are you different? How do you compromise to get along?
-
Try This Today: Buddy Ball
Find a trustworthy buddy to help with this cooperation exercise. Your mission--carry a ball (soccer ball, baseball, play ball) across the room or across the yard. The challenge--buddies work together to move the ball in these ways:
- Stand back to back, with the ball between.
- Face each other, holding the ball with index fingers only.
- Stand side by side, holding the ball with your shoulders!
- Place the ball on the floor, and take turns kicking it until you cross the room.
- Place the ball on the floor, each partner pressing their inside foot on the ball. Lift it and carry it away!
Think about it: How did you use the teamwork skills we learned?
Listen - Speak Up - Take Turns - Be Generous
-
Try This Today: Practice "Sniff and Puff"
When we are frustrated it can be hard to communicate, but we communicate better when stop and become calm. The next time you notice that you are feeling upset, try this:
Sniff and Puff
- Take a deep breath through your nose--as if you are smelling freshly baked cookies-then blow the air out through your mouth the way you do when you blow out a candle.
- Repeat this three times, or maybe even four times.
- Are you ready to think? Do you feel calmer?
Remember that if you stop before you talk you will be giving yourself and everyone else a chance to calmly consider the problem. Then you can find a soution and get back to having fun more quickly.
-
TRY THIS TODAY: SPEAK UP AND SMILE
Did you know that when you talk, the listener can "hear" if you are smiling? Try this experiment with your family:
Ask your family to close their eyes--no peeking!
Say each of these with either a big SMILE or a big FROWN.
Ask if your family can "hear" your smile or frown.
1. I like to play outside.
2. What is for dinner?
3. I love you!
3. My favorite food is ______.
4. What are you doing?
Could they "hear" your smile or frown? Try keeping a SMILE on when you speak up and see what happens.
-
Try This Today: Practice the ART of Conversation
Take the Art of Conversation Challenge!
Try this with your family today: Practice the art of conversation using the strategies you learned in our lesson. Remember to ASK, SHARE, and LISTEN.
Suggested topics are:
1. What should we do after dinner?
2. Do you like swimming?
3. Tell me about your favorite vacation.
4. My favorite sport is _____.
Can you think of another fun conversation to start?
-
Try This Today: Tell a story about Z!
Hello Hawks Rise 1st Graders, it's me, Z!
I remember when we first met in Mrs. Einarson's guidance class, do you? Can you tell your family a story about me? It can be a true story, or a story you create.
-
Try This Today: Think About Your Friends
EVERY DAY IS FUN WHEN YOU HAVE FRIENDS!
Think of three of your favorite friends--they can be family and pets, too.
What do you like best about each of them?
How do you feel when you spend time with them?
How are you a good friend to each of them?
