Outside: Art and Poetry by ESOL Students of Pineview Elementary School
    May 10--24, 2002
    Florida State University
    Oglesby Union Art Gallery

    Opening reception: Friday, May 10, 2002, 6:30--8:30pm

For our special joint project with the FSU Museum of Fine Arts, ESOL students wrote a Japanese-style haiku poem about a photograph they took in the backyard of the school. First they visited a website to read samples of haiku poetry written by other young students. Then they made a paper viewfinder to practice composing their image. Using the viewfinder, students sketched an outdoor scene behind the school and practiced composing a haiku poem. After that, they used a digital camera to photograph a scene in the back of the school. Finally, students composed a haiku poem about the image. Each student's image and poem were printed on 8.5 x 11 white photo paper and exhibited without a frame.
