Field trip to Mission San Luis
Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month!
Wednesday, September 28, 2005
9:30am--1:00pm
To help celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, the Governor's Office invited Pineview students to take a field trip to Mission San Luis.
When we arrived, we were first welcomed and introduced to the mission by Bonnie McKeown, Director of the Mission. Then we were divided into 2 groups and toured the mission with a bilingual interpreter as our guide. We learned about the way of life of the Spaniards and Apalachee natives who lived there. We visited the Franciscan church, an archaelogical dig site, the fryar's house and kitchen, the council house, the lieutenant governor's house and garden, an outdoor kitchen and a leather tanning station.
We also heard a talk by Raulio Baez, head of Public Service Commission and ate lunch afterwards in the Education building. AmeriCorp volunteers helped supervise the students and provided juice drinks and snacks.
Thirty-nine current/former ESOL and non-ESOL students participated in this field trip. In addition, the following parents served as chaperones: Mrs Aldaz, Mr Jou, Mrs Juarez, Mr and Mrs Laureano, Mrs Mendoza, Ms Portillo, Mrs Ruiz, Mrs Salazar and another Mrs Salazar. We had a fun-filled day at the mission and increased our knowledge of Florida's Hispanic heritage!
