ESOL Parent Workshop and Public Library Tour for Hispanic Parents

For our first family literacy workshop for parents, we invited Hispanic parents to view a video and take a tour of the downtown public library with Maria Mena, Youth Services Coordinator for the Leon County public library. We invited parents from Pineview and other southside elementary schools. Students from an Adult Education ESOL class also attended (5 students). One family from Sabal Palm and one family from Astoria Park attended the event. There are currently 29 Hispanic families (18 ESOL and 11 non-ESOL) at Pineview. Of these, 9 parents attended the workshop/tour (31%) (50% if counting only ESOL parents; 9 of 18). The following was our invitation to our parents: 

Pineview Elementary School is sponsoring a literacy workshop for Spanish-speaking parents. You will watch a 30-minute video titled “Sugerencias sobre como leer en familia.” You will also receive a FREE booklet titled “La lectura te lleva a lugares! Una guia para adultos y ninos.” Then Ms Maria Mena, a Spanish-speaking librarian, will guide us on a tour of the public library. She will tell us about the different services offered by the library, such as Spanish books for children and adults, English (ESOL) classes, cassette tapes to learn English, how to write a resume, tax forms, etc.
