    ESOL Parent Meeting

    Tuesday, September 23, 2008

    6:00--7:00 pm

    Pineview ESOL Classroom

This year, ESOL parents of kindergarteners and 1st graders received a Leap Frog literacy kit along with a storage bag. Kindergarteners also received a set of alphabet rubbing plates. Parents of upper grade students received science fair materials since 3rd, 4th and 5th graders are required to conduct their own experiment to enter the Science Fair in April. All Hispanic parents also received a bilingual dictionary.

In addition, this year's meeting incorporated a special feature! As a partnership with Rickards High School's IB program, their Spanish language teacher, Erica Hughes, and I matched our ESOL students to her high school students who are learning Spanish as a Foreign Language. Hence, the high schoolers mentor their young English Language Learners while the Hispanic families help them improve their Spanish. This is a positive example of cultural exchange. The 2nd half of the meeting involved the mentors meeting their young mentees and their families.

Many thanks to Dr Gayle, principal of Rickards High School, for attending this meeting. I also want to thank the families of the following students for attending:

Cheneysha, Raul, Arturo, Akosua, Jiyue, Yarelis, Kevin, Yamila, Fatima, Jonathan, Odalys, Rita, Carlos, Jacqueline, Katherine, Ryuto+Maria, Yeraliel, Ana, Flor, Jerixon, Jose, Benito, Ashley
