Quiz Bowl is a competitive club that is designed to prepare students to compete in a variety of Academic Competitions. Quiz Bowl is open to all students in the 6th-8th grade at Fairview.
Practices take place every Wednesday from 4:00 – 5:30 in Mrs. Johnson’s classroom, beginning the second week of the school year. For the 2018-2019 school year, this will be Wednesday, August 22 at 4:00 PM in Mrs. Johnson's classroom.
Competitions for Quiz Bowl take place on select Saturdays from October-March. If Fairview qualifies a team or teams for the NAQT Middle School National Championship, there will be an out of state competition for qualified members in May.
6th – 8th grade students are eligible to try out for Quiz Bowl. However, the remaining team is selected based on data collected in the six week tryout period. Data includes behavior during tryouts, scores on tests given bi-weekly, and performance in the buzzer competitions that take place during tryouts.
To apply for the club, students must attend the six weeks of mandatory buzzer practices which begin the second Wednesday of school. On the second Wednesday of school, the students will learn information about the competition setting, will receiving information on how to study and best perform during the tryouts, and will be given resources of information that they are expected to study weekly during the 6 week try out period.
The Quiz Bowl team meets once ever week for a required Wednesday practice. These meetings last from 4:00-5:30 PM every Wednesday. Tuesdays are open for optional buzzer practice to any students who wish to attend, these Tuesday practices are not required and are run by former Quiz Bowl team members who have left Fairview and are now in high school.
Meetings take place in Mrs. Johnson’s classroom.
Team members are required to attend Wednesday practices weekly. Team members are required to study outside of the weekly quiz bowl practice. They should be studying from sites like QuizDB, Quizlet, Protobowl and the NAQT “You Gotta Know” webpage. Students are also expected to read the newspaper daily to be informed about the major events happening locally, nationally and internationally to prepare for current event questions in competition.
