    AR Reading

Every student should be reading an AR book(s) of his/her choice weekly so he/she can meet his/her goal for the second nine weeks. AR points are earned by taking tests at school on books he/she has read on his/her level or above and earning at least 80%. Students can take AR tests on books from our classroom library, school library, public library, or books from home as long as they are AR and on or above his/her reading level.

    Reading

On Monday, August 28th, our class will begin focusing on families around the world.

sound of e as in bed, the o as in cot, or the u sound as in bug.

Located on the back of the “Blue Daily Folder” is u1w2 spelling words, vocabulary, comprehension strategies, skills, and high frequency words. Please leave it in the back sleeve of the folder You may also print a copy of the attachment attached to this email.

    Reading-

We jumped right into our Wonders reading series and are quickly learning the expectations of being a second grader. Last week the children completed their first second grade Wonders assessment. This assessment was done whole group and will not count as a grade. I will place your child’s test in their daily folder. As you look over this assessment, you will notice that there are a lot of differences between this assessment and the Wonders assessments from first grade. This year your child will be reading two different stories and answering ten comprehension/skill questions. Your child will also being answering a short response question, where they may be asked to compare and contrast the two stories. The written response question will not be graded until January. I will be modeling and guiding the written response with your child until then.

    Math-

We started chapter 1 in Go Math last week. This chapter centers around number concepts. Today we learned how to use expanded form. I will send (2-3) math practice sheets for homework weekly starting in September. Please look over your child’s homework and remind them to put it back in their folder.

  • A Great Start!

We had a great first week of school! I can tell it is going to be a great year!  I have a wonderful class and everyone seems to enjoy getting to know each other.  During the next few weeks, I will be assessing the academic knowledge of each child as well as learning their individual working behaviors and learning styles.  While I am getting to know the children, they are learning the second gr de “way of work” as well as getting to know their classmates.

    Volunteering

I need someone to volunteer to be our “Homeroom Parent”. As of now, nobody has signed up for this fun job. L The homeroom parent’s main job is to help organize our classroom holiday parties by calling or emailing other parents to bring in requested refreshments. He/she sometimes will need to contact parents to be volunteers at other Buck Lake functions. We will work together! Please email me at brittlem@leonschools.net or send me a note if you are able to take on this very important, helpful, and necessary role.

f you are interested in volunteering in our room or on field trips, please complete the application form on the LCS website.

    Daily Folders

I will be sending home important school information by your child. Please make sure to check your child’s daily folder each night! I am currently creating an email distribution list for our class. Thank you to everyone who replied to my test email yesterday. If you did not receive, the email please let me know.

     To Many Happy Days,

    Ms. Brittle
