We had a busy second week of school! The children are continuing to learn the routines and rules of being a second grader, as we settled into our regular daily routine.

Daily Folders

Please remember to have your child bring his/her blue folder to school every day. Please check your child’s “Daily Folder.

AR Reading

Every student should be reading an AR book(s) of his/her choice weekly so he/she can meet his/her goal for the second nine weeks. AR points are earned by taking tests at school on books he/she has read on his/her level or above and earning at least 80%. Students can take AR tests on books from our classroom library, school library, public library, or books from home as long as they are AR and on or above his/her reading level.

Reading

On Monday, August 28th, our class will begin focusing on families around the world.

We will look at how families in different places have many things in common.

Our U1W2 assessments are scheduled for on Tuesday, September 3rd. The skills for u1w2 are visualizing, character, setting, and events, types of sentences commands and exclamations. U1W2 words contain the short e, o, and u sound.

Spelling/Phonics: short e, o, u. This week’s words contain the phonic

sound of e as in bed, the o as in cot, or the u sound as in bug.

Located on the back of the “Blue Daily Folder” is u1w2 spelling words, vocabulary, comprehension strategies, skills, and high frequency words. Please leave it in the back sleeve of the folder You may also print a copy of the attachment attached to this email.

Math-

We will continue chapter 1 learning place value and 2-digit numbers and even and odd numbers.

Please begin practicing recalling basic addition/subtraction facts. Recalling facts is extremely important and comes in handy for our math chapters. I would recommend spending 10 minutes each day doing math flashcards.

The chapter 1 assessment is scheduled for Friday, August 30th.

Social Studies

Begin learning map skills.
