 Class News:

Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a fun and restful winter break!

We are going to start 2019 with our AR celebration. If your child met their AR goal for the second nine-weeks, he/she may bring an electronic device/toy to school this Friday, January 11th. Please make sure electronic devices come to school fully charged.

Our next field trip is this month. On Wednesday, January 23, second grade will be going to the Challenger Learning Center. This field trip is free for the children, but if you would like to chaperone please send in $5 with your child’s signed field trip notice. Each class will need four chaperones for this field trip. Please sign and return the field trip notice form by Friday, January 14.

Daily Folders

Please remember to have your child bring his/her blue folder to school every day.

Please check your child’s “Daily Folder.

Homework Folders

Every student should be reading an AR book(s) of his/her choice weekly so he/she can meet his/her goal for the second nine weeks. AR points are earned by taking tests at school on books he/she has read on his/her level or above and earning at least 80%. Students can take AR tests on books from our classroom library, school library, public library, or books from home as long as they are AR and on or above his/her reading level. Please remember to sign your child’s AR weekly reading log located in the back of the blue daily folder.

Your child will be taking the 3rd nine weeks STAR assessment next week. Once the STAR assessment is completed, your child will receive his/her new AR goal for the nine weeks.

AIMSWEB January Benchmarking is scheduled for Friday, January 18th.

Tomorrow I will be sending home U3W1 reading homework in your child’s pink folder. The U3W1 reading homework is due back by Tuesday, January 15th.

Peek at This Week and Next Week

Reading- Our class started unit 3 week 1 yesterday. We will continue focusing on how the Earth’s forces affect us. We will be talking about forces that we can observe. The skills for u3w1 are rereading, authors purpose, similies, and action verbs.  Author’s purpose is a challenging skill for second graders to master, but we will practice this skill a lot in class. This week’s words contain the long vowel /a/ sound. The u3w1 comprehension, spelling, writing and vocabulary assessments are scheduled for Tuesday, January 15th

Math- We started Chapter 5 in Go Math today. This chapter introduces how to solve 2-digit subtraction problems using different strategies.

Please remember quick recall of addition/subtraction facts comes in handy for our next few math chapters. I would recommend spending 10 minutes each day doing math flashcards.

Science/Social Studies- Continue learning about Native Americans.
