About the Teacher
Dear Bobcats,
Welcome to First Grade at Buck Lake! Together we will create many memorable and fun learning experiences this year! I just wanted to share a little about myself as well as some pertinent information.
My name is Laura McDermott. I graduated from Liberty High School in Liberty, Missouri in 1998. I received a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Park University in Parkville, Missouri. After graduating, I moved to Tallahassee, Florida. I began working at Epiphany Lutheran as a part-time teacher and as Director of Children’s Ministries in the fall of 2003. During the summer of 2004, I received my Florida Teaching Certificate and I was given a job at Pineview teaching kindergarten and first grade.
At the end of the 2009 school year, I transferred to Buck Lake to be closer to home and to be a part of a supportive and nurturing learning community. I am National Board Certified in Early Childhood Education. I am reading endorsed and certified to teach English for speakers of other languages. This will be my 22nd year of teaching primary education.
After growing up near Kansas City, Missouri I have a deep appreciation for the clean air, beautiful scenery, and warm weather in Tallahassee. Things I enjoy include: teaching, marathon running, volunteering, traveling, reading, and spending time with my family, friends, and pets.
My goal this year is to make sure that EVERY child will work to his/her full potential. I will do my best to promote an educational setting by providing materials and supplies to meet your child’s needs.
Please feel free send an email or call if you have any questions or concerns. I believe that communication is the key to success. The school phone number is 488-6133. I will respond to all emails and calls as soon as possible. If your child’s regular transportation changes, please contact the office and I will be notified.
Thank you for your time. I am looking forward to working with each of you.
