The goal of the James S. Rickards High Music Program is to offer students a solid and well-rounded musical education in a setting that is challenging and enjoyable. In addition, the Band Program's commitment to excellence encourages the development of strong leaders for tomorrow and promotes tolerance, community service and an interest in cultural diversity. In the fall the Music Program focuses on Marching Band, where students are taught musicianship, precision marching and and the importance of teamwork. The Marching Raider Band performs in the traditional, high-energy style of HBCU Bands at varsity football games, parades and other community-outreach events. In the spring the Band Program focuses on symphonic performances, with an emphasis on improving musical skills and mastering a variety of music genres.
