The pollinator garden is a certified Schoolyard Habitat and part of HMSIS' EcoSchool Program. The garden is designed and maintained to support native wildlife - our local pollinators, birds, and other small wildlife. The garden has many native plants which provide food and shelter for its wildlife inhabitants.
Late Summer Update:
Some of the wildflowers bloomed in spring and early summer and are finished for the season. Other flowers and shrubs continue to provide food and cover for the pollinators and other small wildlife that use the garden. Earlier in the season, monarch caterpillars were busy eating their milkweed plants. These plants have grown back and we might see more monarch caterpillars and butterflies in the fall. Black swallowtail caterpillars happily ate the plants provided for them - fennel, parsley, and zizia. These butterflies might also be seen in the gardens until cold weather. Hummingbirds are feeding on nectar from the firebush flowers and other plants. Watch closely and you might see a hummer feeding or zooming in and out of the garden.
