• Wellness Program

The wellness program at DeSoto Trail strives to make our school environment as healthy as it can be and providing our students with the tools they need to create a healthier environment at home. We want to teach our students healthy living skills and empower them as leaders in their communities.

DeSoto Trail has been consistently recognized for the excellence of our wellness program:

    Alliance for a Healthier Generation

Leon County Schools has partnered with the Alliance for a Healthier Generation and the Clinton Foundation in the fight against childhood obesity that is affecting 1 in every 3 children. Healthy kids have higher attendance rates, higher test scores and behave better in class. More than 26,000 schools nationwide are using the Healthy School Program to make this the norm at school. Out of the 26,000 participating schools, DeSoto Trail Elementary is one of only 250 schools that achieved national recognition. The Alliance for a Healthier Generation has taken the latest research on childhood health and combined it with the most effective school policies to maximize impact. After a 2 year process, with cooperation of school staff, parents, community partners and teachers, DeSoto Trail has made significant changes in our school wellness policy. The Alliance for a Healthier Generation published a blog post about DeSoto Trail and Wellness Coordinator Mrs. Baez in recognition of our efforts.

    National Recognition Awards

In 2014, DeSoto Trail was 1 of the 250 schools in the entire nation to receive national recognition, and one of eight schools in the state to receive the Silver National Recognition Award from the Alliance for a Healthier Generation and the Clinton Foundation, the highest award given to a Florida school this year.

In 2015, DeSoto Trail was the first and only school in Florida to earn the Gold National Recognition Award from the Alliance for a Healthier Generation.

    Red Ribbon Program (Drug Prevention)

The Red Ribbon program is designed to prevent drug use by helping students to make good choices. DeSoto Trail participates in Red Ribbon week each year and has incorporated Red Ribbon concepts throughout the curriculum and across all grade levels. In 2014, DeSoto Trail became a Red Ribbon Certified School. We are currently the only Red Ribbon Certified School in Leon County.
