Welcome to the Fifth Grade! Look forward to a year filled with learning and excitement. Expectations are higher and the workload is tougher, but the rewards are many. This year, students will become more organized and independent in preparation for middle school.
Fifth graders will continue to develop reading strategies and skills through the Savvas MyView Literacy curriculum. Fifth grade students are encouraged to participate in the Accelerated Reader program. Many incentives and activities have been put in place by the 5th grade teachers and DeSoto Trail to encourage children to read, grow, and develop a LOVE for reading.
We are teaching the B.E.S.T. standards using the GO Math! curriculum. We will cover place value, multiplication, division, adding and subtracting decimals, multiplying and dividing decimals, adding and subtracting fractions, multiplying and dividing fractions, geometry, measurement, and finding the volume of a shape. Algebra is embedded in each skill.
Using the ScienceFusion curriculum, students will learn about the nature of science, the solar system, weather systems, matter and properties, body systems, forces and motion, heat and energy, and organisms and their environment. Students will also participate in a fun-filled day of science activities and challenges during our Science Olympiad. To bring to life space and the history of space exploration, fifth-grade students will embark on a field trip to NASA's Challenger Learning Center. We will also participate in a STEM field trip to SkateWorld in the spring.
Students in the fifth grade also have the opportunity to earn a place on our Safety Patrol team, appear on our WDTS morning news show, participate in the spelling bee, perform in the musical “Back to the 80’s!”, and write and present a speech for the Tropicana Speech Contest.
As you can see, fifth grade is a busy year, but it is a year filled with fun! You can expect to see your child make significant gains in their education. DeSoto Trail is an amazing elementary school where students continue to be challenged in all areas. Thank you for collaborating with us in making this a great year for your child.
