It’s Never Too Late to Set New Goals: Achieving Academic Success in 2025

We are just two months into 2025, and it is still time for students and families to set new academic goals and make the most of the educational opportunities offered in Leon County Schools. A new year and new quarter bring a fresh start, and whether students aim to improve their grades, develop better study habits, or explore new learning programs. Setting clear goals can pave the way for even greater success no matter what Leon County School you attend.

“Setting goals helps students know where they are going.  It allows them to feel a sense of accomplishment, whether it is getting to school on time, being prepared in class, or completing homework at night.  Feeling prepared increases confidence, reduces anxiety, and reinforces good habits.  Keep it simple, goal setting does not have to be complicated.  Start with one goal and then add a new goal when you are ready.  Talk to your teachers, school counselor, parents, or a trusted adult about your goals and let them help you get started and be accountable.  Create or print a visual reminder of your goal (i.e. a picture, a list, a quote, etc.) and place it somewhere you can see it daily (i.e. bedroom door, vanity mirror, fridge…) to help you remember your purpose.  Vision boards are also a fun way to keep track of, and a daily reminder of, your goals or dreams,” said Teresa Dennis, Leon County Schools Graduation Pathways Coordinator.

When students set realistic and achievable academic goals, they take ownership of their learning and gain confidence in their abilities. Our families and community play a key role in supporting students on this journey. By working together and encouraging them, parents, guardians and the community can help the student create a plan, celebrate small milestones, and adjust strategies along the way. Learning has always been fun and can be a way to encourage growth and independence.

To maximize success, students can use the SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound) goal framework. Here are some examples:

  • Specific – “I will read for 30 minutes each night to improve my comprehension.”
  • Measurable – “I will raise my math grade from a B to an A by the end of the semester.”
  • Achievable – “I will complete all homework assignments on time by setting a daily schedule.”
  • Relevant – “I will improve my writing skills to prepare for college applications.”
  • Time-bound – “I will learn 10 new vocabulary words each week for the next three months.”

Our district offers a variety of programs to help students reach their academic potential. Whether your child is interested in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), the arts, dual enrollment, or career and technical education, there are numerous pathways to explore. We provide advanced academic opportunities, including Honors courses, Advanced Placement (AP) classes, International Baccalaureate (IB) courses, and dual enrollment programs. Students interested in STEM and innovation can engage in robotics, coding, and engineering programs designed to foster creativity and problem-solving skills. For those passionate about the arts, we offer enrichment opportunities in music, theater, and visual arts. Additionally, our career readiness programs equip students with technical certifications and vocational training to prepare them for future success.

Academic success is not just about grades—it is about growth, curiosity, and lifelong learning. Encourage your child to stay engaged in school activities, seek help when needed, and maintain a positive mindset. You can stay informed by attending parent-teacher meetings, participating in school events, and utilizing online resources provided by the district.

As we continue to move forward in 2025, let us work together to set goals, explore opportunities, and create a strong foundation for academic achievement. Here is to a successful and rewarding year ahead!
