    My Mission Statement:

It is my mission, as your child's English teacher: 1) to provide students with the very best learning opportunities in the English language arts, literature, writing and critical thinking; 2) to facilitate a loving, caring classroom environment where students will thrive as emerging adults; 3) to foster a lifelong love of reading for enjoyment.

    About Me:

I was born in Chicago, Illinois and raised in Davie, Florida.  I knew from the time I was in kindergarten that I would become a teacher one day.  I loved my first teacher and raced home after school to "teach" my dolls.  My passion for education, personal connections, reading and writing continued to grow throughout my childhood.  After high school, I earned a Bachelor's of Science in English Education 6-12 at Florida State University. As I progressed through my career, I added certification endorsements for ESOL, gifted and reading.  I've had the pleasure of teaching both middle school (6th grade) and high school (9-12th grade).   I became a Timberwolf in 2006 and I'm looking forward to my 19th year of teaching at Chiles.

My family of five consists of my husband, my daughter and two "kitties" (a.k.a. fully grown cats).  We fill our time with hiking, reading, jigsaw puzzles and cooking.  I feel blessed to have both a wonderful home-family and school-family.  Thank you for the opportunity to teach your child and to work with you during the 2024-2025 school year.

    Instructional Model:

We will be using Canvas as our Learning Management System (LMS) this year. I teach using a hybrid model of direct instruction and digital platform. We will begin class by engaging in lessons, class discussions, application activities, reading analysis (and more) in a variety of whole class instruction, group collaboration and individual exploration.  Students will have the second part of class to apply their knowledge by using Canvas to submit assignments and take assessments.  Students are encouraged to collaborate in their groups and seek my assistance as they work with the new concepts.  Canvas is updated daily with makeup work, lessons, assignments, email, announcements and more.  Students are expected to bring their school-issued Chromebook to class each day.  Personal computers and mobile devices will not be allowed as a substitute.

    How to Offer Support:

Parents are encouraged to sign up for a Canvas Observer account.  As the saying goes, "it takes a village to raise a child," and I'm excited to work together with you.  Please visit the following links for more information.  Grades and attendance will continue to be posted in Focus; however, Canvas will contain announcements, due dates, assignment submission status, grading feedback, etc.  Please feel welcome to email me any time at parsonsh@leonschools.net.  (Note: Allow up to 48 hours for a reply, not including holidays and weekends.)
