     School History

Our school property and the neighborhoods north to Lake Jackson were part of a 691 acre dairy farm owned by C. C. Sellers, who had been a high school teacher. Later, it became a hay and cattle farm with the last cows being sold off due to the drought of 1998.

The ground-breaking ceremony was held on July 17, 1997.  New school "I", originally proposed to teach Pre-K to 8th grade, opened to 6th grade with the foundation of another building under the P.E. field for future growth.  The Ribbon cutting ceremony was held in August 1998 and approximately 325 students in 25 classrooms attended Canopy Oaks that first year.  The last 6th grade class was in 2004. Over 700 students are currently enrolled in 36 Pre-K through 5th grade classrooms.

The students voted to name the school Canopy Oaks after the large trees on Old Bainbridge Road, chose the Cardinal as our mascot, and our school colors of Hunter Green and Khaki.

Mrs. Carol Bishop Barineau was the principal until she retired (1998 - 2010), followed by Mr. William (Billy) Epting (2010 - 2012), Mrs. Brooke Brunner (2012 - 2014), Mr. Paul Lambert (2014 - 2020), and the current principal, Mrs. Staci Mortham (2020 - until present).

     School Grades

    Dear parents and community members:

The Florida Department of Education released the 2016-17 district school grades for K-12. In Leon County Schools 95% (36 of 38) of all schools earned an "A", "B", or "C".  Thirteen schools are graded an "A" and seven schools are graded a "B". 92% of elemenrtary schools earned a letter grade of an "A", "B", or "C". 100% of high schools and middle schools graded or received a letter grade of an "A", "B", or "C". Five of the six schools who received a "D" last year improved one letter grade.

"There is always a lot of anxiety around the release of school grades. I am thankful for the hard work of our students, teachers and school administrators. We should all be proud of their efforts, " said Superintendent of Schools, Rocky Hanna.

We are pleased to pass along to you that Canopy Oaks Elementary, rose to the challenge of new standards and a new test to receive a “B” school grade for the 2016-2017 school year. This accomplishment would not have been possible without our amazing teachers, our very supportive parents, and the best students anywhere.  Thank you for all your effort in making our school AMAZING!  Congratulations!
