MAGNETElective Selection
Beginning Band- The band program offers instruction at the beginning, intermediate (concert), and advanced (symphonic) level of instruction. Beginning Band requires no prior experience. Financial Assistance and school instruments are available.
Orchestra I- Students with no experience or limited instructional experience in playing stringed instruments are provided with further skills of their instrument and receive practice in playing together as a group (limited to violin, viola, cello, and bass.) Students are placed according to their ability on their chosen instrument.
Beginning Chorus- The choral program develops performance skills in voice, singing, and self-expression. Chorus members participate in small and large group performances throughout the year. Beginning Chorus is made up of 6th grade students and there is no audition or experience necessary.Beginning Percussion - This course is an entry and intermediate level course designed for students who have an interest in learning to play drums, and other percussion related instruments. Students enrolled in the course will learn approaches to playing various percussion instruments, rhythm and note comprehension, as well as various ensemble skills. Students who enroll for the course are not expected to have any prior musical training or knowledge. Students must submit an application to Ms. Whalley for approval into this class.
Guitar – Student engage in this hands-on class, learning guitar basics as well as brushing up on previous skills. Students will be learning the basic fundamental skills needed for learning to play the guitar. Students will work on beginner music theory, finger mechanics, rhythm, melody, chords and building their ears to excel in music.
Art I - This course is designed for students to explore their artistic expressions through 2D media.
Science & Technology Exploration – This semester-long elective course provides students with a semester of Technology Exploration (including typing, digital tools) and a semester of Science STEM (including CSI experience and Science Fair).
Careers & Agricultural Sciences - This year-long elective course introduces students to a variety of subjects in agricultural sciences. From vegetable gardening to consumer education, from poultry farming to crafting and construction, students should be prepared to work together in teams and enjoy getting their hands and shoes dirty.
Fiber Arts / Knitting - Learn the fine art of knitting and explore other fiber arts including crochet, embroidery, needle felting, and weaving.
Physical Education- The physical education program (Fitness, Grade 6) is designed to develop competencies in physical fitness, body-management skills, skills related to throwing, catching, striking with the body, striking with objects, and strategies. Students will be required to dress in a functional physical education uniform to participate. Uniform and lockers are required.Robotics – From cleaning our homes to assisting in complex surgeries, robots are an important and increasing part of our lives. The Intro to Robotics course is a semester-long course designated for 6th graders to explore the field of robotics and all it has to offer. Robotics is a lab-based course that uses a hands-on approach to introduce the basic concepts of robotics, focusing on the construction and programming of autonomous mobile robots. Course information will be tied to lab experiments; students will work in groups to build and test increasingly more complex mobile robots, culminating in an end-of-semester robot contest. We will be using a combination of VEX Robotic Design System and LEGO Robotics as our platforms.
Math Competitions – Do you love math? Do you like to be challenged? If so, join Math Competition! 6th graders cover Pre-Algebra (8th grade) topics to compete in math competitions held in Tallahassee throughout the school year. 7th graders solidify those Pre-Algebra topics and venture into competitive Algebra. All grade levels participate in the MathCOUNTS regional competition for a spot at the MathCOUNTS state competition. If you're a math enthusiast who is self-motivated and hard-working, this course is for you!

Band 2 (Concert) – Students who have successfully completed Band I.
Percussion- This course is an entry and intermediate level course designed for students who have an interest in learning to play drums, and other percussion related instruments. Students enrolled in the course will learn approaches to playing various percussion instruments, rhythm and note comprehension, as well as various ensemble skills. Students who enroll for the course are not expected to have any prior musical training or knowledge. Students must submit an application to Ms. Whalley for approval into this class.
Orchestra – For students who have never played an instrument before. If students have played a string instrument, but were not in Orchestra this past year and would like to opt out of this beginning course, they need to audition with the teacher.

Art 2 – In this advanced art class students will continue to explore and create art and to build upon the basics learned in Art I. (Prerequisite – Art 1)
Physical Education - The physical education program (Fitness, Grade 7) is designed to develop competencies in physical fitness, body-management skills, skills related to throwing, catching, striking with the body, striking with objects, and strategies. Students will be required to dress in a functional physical education uniform to participate. Uniform and lockers are required.
Careers & Agricultural Sciences - This year-long elective course introduces students to a variety of subjects in agricultural sciences. From vegetable gardening to consumer education, from poultry farming to crafting and construction, students should be prepared to work together in teams and enjoy getting their hands and shoes dirty.ADV Agriculture – must have taken at least one year of Careers & Agricultural Sciences to qualify for the advanced level class.
Journalism (Newspaper/Yearbook) – This course will be a combined School newspaper/yearbook program. This class will be limited to 20 students; an application will be required.
Fiber Arts 1- Learn to Knit & Other Fiber Arts: Learn the basic skills of knitting, crochet, felting, drop spindle and other fiber arts.Fiber Arts 2 - This class is a continuation from Fiber Arts one where: Students get more in-depth instruction Knitting, Crochet, Sewing, and Embroidery. Learning more advanced skills in each these areas, while also learning how plan a project from start to finish.
Cubs United – This class provides one on one peer support to work with students with disabilities. The students chosen for this class will share in academic support and social skills.

Band 3 (Symphonic) – Students who have successfully completed Band 1 and 2 or placed based on audition.

Intro. To Health Sciences / Health Experiences Honors (HS) - This is a health course designed to provide general medical terminology and preparation for the Health Academy at Rickards High School. However, this course is not only for these students. The course will explore opportunities in the health career fields, as well as allow students to become first aid and CPR certified.
