English I (H)

English IV: College Prep
Preparing you for the demands of reading, writing, and communicating in college and beyond, you will hone your skills in creative and analytical writing and apply concepts learned to closely read and analyze contemporary and historical informational text.

AP English Language
This course provides high school students with college-level instruction in analyzing and writing various texts. The course covers topics in language and rhetoric as well as expository and persuasive writing. Students become skilled readers of prose written in various periods, disciplines, and rhetorical contexts. This course fulfills one required English credit for high school graduation. To help allow for course completion prior to the AP exams in May, FLVS closes enrollment for full-credit courses at the end of September.

AP English Literature
This course provides college-level instruction in active, close reading and analysis of imaginative literature. Through the close reading of carefully selected works of literary merit, students learn to consider how a work's style, figurative language, theme, and other literary elements contribute to its cultural significance. This course meets one required English credit for high school graduation. To help allow for course completion prior to the AP exams in May, FLVS closes enrollment for full-credit courses at the end of September.

Algebra I* (H)
Algebra 1 emphasizes the importance of algebra in everyday life through hundreds of real-world examples. Assessments are designed to ensure that your understanding goes beyond rote memorization of steps and procedures. Upon successful course completion, you will have a strong foundation in Algebra 1 and will be prepared for other higher-level math courses. This is a required math course for high school graduation.

Geometry* (H)
Geometry exists everywhere in the world around you. We use it to build bridges, to design maps, or to create perspective in paintings. Throughout this course, you will use problem solving and real-world applications to gain the knowledge of geometric concepts and their practical uses. This is a required math course for high school graduation.

Algebra II (H)
You will learn about polynomials, quadratic equations, linear and exponential functions, sequences and series, probability and statistics, and trigonometry. Throughout the course, these mathematical concepts are applied to everyday occurrences to demonstrate how the world around us functions.

Pre-Calculus
Dive deeper into your knowledge of functions by analyzing their key features and combining them to solve real-world problems. Learn about trigonometric functions and their applications, along with new ways to use the coordinate plane to represent different types of functions. Apply these skills to discover the power mathematics has in everyday life and to prepare for advanced mathematical studies in college or your future career.

Physical Science (H)
Ever wonder why more massive objects require more force to move? Perhaps you have questioned how new substances are made, or how energy is involved in changes in matter? These are some of the concepts students will be exploring in Physical Science. This course teaches the foundational concepts of physics and chemistry. Students will build an understanding of physical and chemical phenomena through scientific inquiry, interactive experiences, virtual and hands-on labs, higher order thinking, and collaborative projects, enabling them to apply these principles to their everyday lives.

Biology* (H)
Explore the structure, function, diversity, and evolution of living matter by taking an in-depth look at the fundamental characteristics of living organisms. You will have the opportunity to perform hands-on lab activities and develop relationships through collaborative learning. This is a required science course for high school graduation.

Chemistry (H)
Atoms and molecules are the fundamental particles in our universe, and chemistry is your guide to understanding all about them. This course will strengthen scientific inquiry skills while challenging higher-order thinking processes through problem-solving and real-world applications. Chemistry is what connects all parts of the world together.

Marine Science (H)
Delve deeply into Earth’s bodies of water and study geologic structures and how they impact the oceans. Investigate characteristics of various populations of aquatic life, patterns of distribution, and ongoing changes occurring in our ecosystem.

Forensic Science
Take a look at forensics through the lens of some of the world’s most famous and intriguing crime cases. This course examines the latest forensic techniques and innovations used to solve crimes. It also focuses on basic scientific principles and laboratory processes used in the field, such as DNA testing, toxicology, and material analysis. Investigative experiences for students include spectrometry, electrophoresis, and evidence analysis techniques. Students also study crime scene processing and evidence collection during crime scene investigations (CSI). This Forensic Science course satisfies state laboratory requirements.

This laboratory course focuses on the study of space and the geologic and atmospheric forces that shape our world. Through experimentation and investigation, you will explore Earth’s cycles, including the geosphere, hydrosphere, cryosphere, atmosphere, and carbon cycle.

Peer Counseling 1 (0.5)
Gain the skills to help you succeed in all areas of your life. You will learn how to take action, set goals, manage your time, and help your peers. This course is recommended for English Language Learner (ELL) students but open to all students. This course provides elective credit.

Peer Counseling 2 (0.5)
Increase your confidence and build your social skills as you learn how to conquer peer pressure, social anxiety, and the unnecessary risks that can derail your future. In this course, you’ll discover how your “super-charged” teen brain really works. By the end of your training, you will have new power to direct your own life and lead your classmates. This course provides elective credit.

What are your rights as an American citizen? In this course, you will investigate aspects of family and consumer law, and learn how the state and federal court systems work. Gain an understanding of the judicial system and examine key differences between civil and criminal law. This course provides elective credit.

Driver's Education (0.5)
Begin to develop safe driving skills by studying the Highway Transportation System, road signs, rules of the road, and how to make good choices behind the wheel. This course fulfills the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) required completion of the Traffic Law & Substance Abuse Education (TLSAE) course. As an added benefit for completing the course with FLVS, you will also be eligible to take the Class E Knowledge Exam for licensing online for FREE! This course provides elective credit.

This course is for students who have either scored a Level 1 on FSA Reading or fallen into a range showing intervention need on STAR Reading/Early Literacy. Students are required to take this course in place of one of their elective choices.
