• Each week, this page will be updated with a new assignment for the 2nd grade students attending Digital Academy. The activity will be the same as the activity the students coming to see me in class are doing. If you have any questions or problems, please email me at williamsj1@leonschools.net. Thank you!

The first lesson you did was on Home Row, which is the middle row of letters. This is where your fingers "live" all of the time. They go and visit other keys and type them, but they always go back to the home row. Your thumbs stay on the space bar. Remember, your fingers stay on the Home Row, except to go to the letters/keys on the upper or lower row, or the number row. Thumbs are on the space bar.

**Once you have completed all of the lessons, you can go to starfall.com**

    HOUR OF CODE, WEEK 2

This week, you will once again go to the Code.org/learn website and complete activities in coding. If the link provided does not already have the filters in place, please select the following filter before beginning:

Grades 2-5 (this is across the top of the page)

Then, going down the left side of the webpage, make these selections:

Under Classroom Technology - select "Computer"

Under Activity Type - select "Self-led Tutorial"

    (skip Length)

    Under Language - select "Blocks"

**See previous week's lesson for more details about Hour of Code if needed**

  • WEEK OF DECEMBER 7-11

    HOUR OF CODE WEEK

This week, you will go to the Code.org/learn website and complete activities in coding. If the link provided does not already have the filters in place, please select the following filter before beginning:

Grades 2-5 (this is across the top of the page)

Then, going down the left side of the webpage, make these selections:

Under Classroom Technology - select "Computer"

Under Activity Type - select "Self-led Tutorial"

    (skip Length)

    Under Language - select "Blocks"

This is your first time completing the Hour of Code with activities like this. In Kindergarten and 1st Grade, you coded with Fuzzball by helping him find his way through mazes. You had to put the arrows - up, down, forward, or backward - in the proper order to help Fuzzball go through the maze correctly and collect stars. This year, you will get to choose your own activity. If you choose one but find it too difficult, either have your grown-up help you or choose a different activity.

**Parents - some of the coding activities may be too difficult for your child to complete on their own. They are required to read directions so they know what steps to take. You may need to help guide them in choosing activities they are able to complete more independently. Anything that has "Scratch" in the title will not be a good option for your child unless you are willing to help them throughout.**

I know it may seem like a lot, but the lessons are short. After completion, your student may go to www.starfall.com to practice reading and math skills. As always, if you have any questions, please email me at williamsj1@leonschools.net.

  • WEEK OF OCTOBER 12-16

This week, your child can play Ghost Typing, Jr. or any of the previous keyboarding games for continued practice typing letters. Ghost Typing, Jr. is a bit different than the previous games. The letters will be coming forward and your child will need to type the letters before they disappear and one of the 5 lives is gone. It can get a bit fast paced as the game progresses. As a reminder, your child should not have to login to use ABCya.com from the Canopy Oaks website. All choices are listed below. Your child may play only Ghost Typing, Jr., or all four previous games, or can choose one or two. The important thing is that he/she continues to practice keyboarding skills.

  • WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 28-OCTOBER 2

This week, students will continue to practice keyboarding skills with the game Jump Key on ABCya.com. The directions to access the game are below. I have a link provided, but the links do not seem to always work correctly. You should never have to login to access the games on ABCya.com. There are 5 levels in this game. You start with Level 1 which is lower case letters. Level 2 is upper case letters only - remember  to hold down the shift key to type capital letters, just like you learned last week in Keyboard Zoo 2. Level 3 mixes lower case and upper case letters, so be careful! Level 4 practices the numbers only. Level 5 is a speed game - you can do this if you want. You can redo any level you wish to get better.

    FOLLOW THESE STEPS:

    1. Go to the Canopy Oaks Website - www.leonschools.net/canopyoaks

    2. Click on the Students tab

    3. Click on the first icon - ABCya.com

    4. Click on the blue circle with 2 for 2nd grade

    5. Click the purple Skills button

    6. Look for the Jump Key button and select.

  • WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 21-25

As we continue our practice of finding letters on the keyboard, this week 2nd grade will play Keyboard Zoo 2. This game will show you how to use the shift keys to type capital letters. You will also get some practice typing words and sentences. It is very important that you listen carefully and look at the keyboard on the screen so you know what keys to type, and which fingers to place on the keys.

Parents: If the link is not working or asks for a password, the game can be accessed this way -

Go to the Canopy Oaks website (www.leonschools.net/canopyoaks)

    Click on Students

Choose ABCya.com (it is the first icon on the page)

    Select 2nd Grade (blue circle)

    Select ABC Letters (orange button)

Look at 2nd row - Keyboard Zoo 2 should be there

  • WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 14-18

This week, you will play Alpha Munchies for continued practice finding the letters on the keyboard. When you first open the game, be sure to choose "Beginner" (it is the green button on top). Then, you will choose a player. There are 9 levels. You start with Level 1 which is the homerow - the row of letters right in the middle of the keyboard. As you move up the levels, you will add letters. As the munchies come down, type the letter on the munchie before it hits the ground and eats the fruit. You can redo any level you wish to get better. Once you complete all 9 levels, you are done!

  • WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 7-11

    2ND GRADE

CLICK THE FIRST LINK TO WATCH A WELCOME VIDEO FIRST

You may be asked to login - if so, I think it is the normal login information that it used for Classlink.

    Thanks!

    Ms. Williams

  • Dear 2nd Graders and Families,

If the link does not work, then follow the steps in my video to get to Typing Rocket Jr. - Canopy Oaks website, Students, ABCya.com, 2nd grade, Skills (purple box). Remember to only use your pointer fingers and only type the letters you can get to. If you cannot get to a letter, just let that rocket go past - it will not count against you. Each time you play, try to get more "hits" than the last time - see how high you can get your score!

    Ms. Williams
