ESOL: Parent Involvement

  • As an ELL parent there are many ways you can help your child to succeed in the school system even if you don't know the language yet. These are some of the steps that will make a difference in your child's success.

    • Always check our website to be informed. Our website can be translated by Google (see picture for location).select language
    • Help your child to attend and be on time to school every day.
    • Have a reading time with your child even if it is in a language different from English using books or online stories and be sure your child gets a good night to sleep.
    • Contact your teacher. We offer help communicating in Spanish as need it or you always can bring a family member or friend to help you.
    • When responding to messages from teachers, you can say "okay" or send a happy face if you understand or agree. Remember that you can use your Google Translator on your phone and provide a longer answer if it is necessary.
    • Attend the different school events when you can; your child will feel happy and it will boost his or (her) confidence.
    • Be assertive and look for help or support if you see your child is having a hard time.
    • Visit the Public Library and get your child a Library card to take books to read together in your home. If you don't know how to read it in English ask your child to read it to you. Ask him or her questions Who, Where, What, How, Why and When. Don't forget to check the ZPD number appropriate for your child's reading development.
    • For parents with small children, there are many activities around the house, in the car while driving, and everywhere you go to practice letters, sounds, rhyming words, singing songs, and related ideas to math, science, and more.
    • When you are with your child there is a lot that you can learn together.  If you see a new word look in your phone for the meaning, or ask somebody for the meaning. You will be a great role model for your child, and he or she will learn there is nothing wrong in not knowing something and it is important to take action and look for the knowledge.
