Surfboard and Crashing Wave Project
Goal: To draw a picture with a surfboard stuck in the sand and a crashing wave behind it.
MY TEACHING VIDEO IS BELOW THIS TUTORIAL
1. Draw the crest
The first step in drawing a wave is to draw the crest. Start by drawing a horizontal line, slope it down and continue the line.
2. Draw the barrel
Add “C” shaped curved lines on the higher part of the sloped line.
3. Add the whitewater
Start at the top of the wave really small and get progressively bigger as you follow the crest down. Once to the bottom of the wave add a few squiggly lines to add to the whitewater. Connect the “C” shaped lines to the whitewater.
4. Draw the wave
Add a slightly curved line right below where the crest starts to slope.
5. Add your own style
I like to add Heather Brown inspired circles for the whitewater. Connect the “C” shaped lines to the whitewater circles. Decorate your white circles to your artistic visions.

- To begin this project choose a shoe to use as a model for your drawing and place it where you can see it. The best place is on the table near your paper, but REMEMBER shoe soles are dirty, so put newpaper or a paper towel under the shoe! Use whatever paper you have and a pencil. Make careful observations of the shoe and then draw the shoe adding as much detail as possible.
- I begin drawing the the outline of the shoe first and then fill in the details.
- Remember to do your best, take your time, and HAVE FUN. You'll be surprised with how good it will turn out.

Lesson 1
Goal: To Learn about James Rizzi and draw a cityscape picture in the style of James Rizzi.
Materials: Paper and pencil (optional: Sharpie or dark marker, crayons or colored pencils or color markers)
About artist James Rizzo
James Rizzi (New York, October 5, 1950 - there, December 26, 2011) was an American pop art artist from Brooklyn, New York.James Rizzi studied at the Florida Art Academy (Gainesville)In Rizzi's work you often come across his birthplace New York. The paintings sometimes look childishly naive, with the bright colors and radiant cheerfulness. In the art press he is often labeled as "Urban Primitive Artist". Rizzi claims to be influenced by Picasso, Klee and Dubuffet.
WATCH THIS VIDEO ⇓How To:
Begin by drawing the buildings up front using rectangles of different heights that touch on the sides. Then add several background buildings using more rectangles that touch the top of the first buildings. After the buildings are drawn draw unique tops for each of the buildings. Next add James Rizzi stye faces to most of the buildings. Next add doors and windows to the buildings and other details to complete the cityscape picture.
There are several options for coloring in your drawing.
You could either shade in the buidings using a pencil from light gray to dark.
If you have a Sharpie or dark marker you could trace over your pencil lines then shade with a pencil, color with crayons or markers, or use watercolor paints.
