• Media Program

The media center at Sabal Palm is designed to enhance and support each child's education. Students in media receive instruction in library and information skills. It is our goal to ensure that students are effective users of ideas and information and to help students develop cognitive strategies for selecting, retrieving, analyzing, evaluating, synthesizing and creating information at all age levels and in all curriculum content areas. The media center's regular hours are 8:00 a.m. to 2:50 p.m. Students may come to the media center before school to check out books and take Accelerated Reader quizzes.

    Accelerated Reader

SPES uses the district-adopted Accelerated Reader (AR) reading practice program. This individualized program is an integral part of helping our students become a better readers. Reading comprehension is the main focus of AR, and students' progress is tracked by AR quizzes, which they must take independently of any adult help. We do encourage parents to monitor their children's progress using Renaissance Home Connect. Accelerated Reader is an individualized program that assigns each student a personalized and attainable reading practice goal. Students who meet their goals are invited to celebrate at school-wide events throughout the year. We also have a school-wide goal of 22,000 points this school year. The Leon County Superintendent of Schools, Jackie Pons, has challenged the district to read one million books this year, and AR data will be used to track our progress toward that goal as well.

    SSYRA Book List (Grades 3-5)

The Florida Association for Media in Education publishes a list each year of Sunshine State Young Reader Award-winning books. The list of books is attached to this web page. Students who read all 15 books and pass the AR quizzes on them will be invited to a special celebration with Mrs. Chrisinger at the end of the year.

FRA Children's Book Award List (Grades K-2)

The Florida Reading Association publishes a list of Children's Book Award winners each year. These books are appropriate for students in grades K-2. The list of books is attached to this web page. Parents are encouraged to read these books with their children and participate in the voting process.

    Summer Reading

Sabal Palm does not publish a list of required summer reading each year. Instead, students are encouraged to read books that interest them and keep a summer reading log. Students who read six or more books during the summer are recognized at a celebration at the beginning of the new school year. The school media center will be open one Wednesday each month during the summer for families to come and check out books for summer reading.
