If you have any questions about the district packets, please don’t hesitate to ask. This is a review put out by the county of items we have already learned. Starting on the 13th, I will be sending out weekly lesson plans. This will be in all of the subject areas that I normally teach-Reading, Writing, Math, Social Studies/Science. It will include some items that need to be accessed through a computer or smartphone. It will have paper items also. Please let me know if you do not have access to a computer or a smartphone. If you have a smartphone, you can show the videos the same as you would on a computer. On some items, you will be asked to take a picture of it and send it back to me-like the Put Me in the Zoo writing. I will also continue to video myself reading books (definitely out of my comfort zone). This will be once or twice a week. When I send a video, please show it to your child.I know this a stressful time, and we are asking that you just do the best you can. This is a totally new way of teaching so I am learning!! In that light, please be patient as we navigate this process together.*I am always available by email! If you or your child would like a Microsoft TEAMs chat, please let me know and I can set it up. I’m still learning that too!I miss your kiddos!!
I sure have missed seeing all our students at school! I hope everyone is doing well and staying safe. Over the past week we’ve been working hard to make this transition from school to home as easy as possible. I am hoping this update gives you ideas and resources to help your child continue to grow. We know this is a unique situation so just do the best that you can! We are here to help and alleviate any stress this may bring. Please feel free to email me if you have any questions. I appreciate all of your support at home. I hope to see your sweet kiddos May 1st. ! As always though, I will keep you updated as we find out more information about the days to come.
*Learning Packets: Learning packets were made available online beginning 3/27 at 5:00 p.m. You can access them from the Leon County Schools web site by clicking on the” Covid-19” link, or you can access them from the Gilchrist web page. You will see two weeks of activities for all subject areas. Do not feel pressured to complete it all at once! Have your child take his/her time and work at their own speed. Also, make sure they are completing the work as independently as possible. Feel free to read the directions to them, then let them try to complete the work on their own. However, you are definitely allowed to help guide them if needed. Lastly, you can print each packet for your child to complete the pages with a pencil, or you can download each file and use the PDF markup tool for your child to complete the work on the computer (just make sure to save it). Whichever is easier for you and your child is fine with us. Remember, this is a review.
*Class Webpage: I will use this website or email to give details on how the learning packets should be used, assignment due dates, and ideas for enrichment. Please check this webpage often for any new information. As of now, the plan will be for our students to complete a few pages per day in the learning packet. No rush to finish it all in one day! We are still waiting for clarification on how to submit and grade these packets. In the meantime, just encourage your child to do their best and we'll keep you updated through this webpage!
*ClassLink and IReady: IReady is the reading and math computer program we use at school. It works using Firefox or Chrome. The recommendation is for students to try and complete around 15-20 minutes of both reading and math a day. This can be found in your child’s ClassLink. To locate this page, find the Leon County Schools webpage. In the top right-hand corner there is a blue “cloud” called ClassLink. Once you click on this, you will see a blue screen with two options: login with username and password or sign in with quick card.
--To log in with username and password, your child’s log in information is:
Username: student id number @edu.leonschools.net
Password: lunch number
These numbers can be found on their focus page.
*Additional Resources: There are a ton of great resources to help your child with academic skills, as well as ways to get some energy out!
YouTube: Jack Hartmann, gonoodle, Have Fun Teaching, Cosmic Kids Yoga
ClassLink: IReady (Reading and Math), Brain Pop Jr., Starfall
Feel free to explore! There are a ton of great resources and computer programs around to help your child. Things such as virtual access to library books, virtual field trips, online art lessons, online science experiments, and various other educational websites.
All Leon County Schools will be closed to students through April 15th. We will keep you updated with information as it comes!
