Mr. Jimmy Gillis
Mr. Gillis was brought up in Brandon, Fl. where began studying music at a young age. He began as a violin student at the age of 10 but only a few years later would switch to the String Bass as his primary orchestral instrument. He studied Bass with Dee Moses(USF), Lloyd Goldstein(Florida Orchestra), Bill McNeiland(Jacksonville University), Kevin Cassidy (UF), Pam Andrews (FSU) and Melanie Punter (FSU). At 13 he also studied classical guitar with Jose Forns and later Bill Hoff. He also studied Jazz guitar with Flip Shoemaker. He began studying choral music at the age of 14 and continued vocal study with Waneta Dunham, Roy Delp, Luke Nash, Earl Pate, John Grigsby and James Burichter.
He received a bachelor of Music Education from Florida State University where he studied string music education with Dr. Michael Allen, author of "Essential Elements for Strings". Mr. Gillis has performed in many different facets of the music industry, including orchestras, jazz bands, R&B , country and bluegrass ensembles. Mr. Gillis performs around the country and has directed for the Tallahassee Symphony Youth Orchestra where he founded the Tallahassee Fiddlers and has been a clinincian for FSU Summer camps. He has judged orchestras for the Florida Orchestra Associations Music Performance assesments and is a member of the Florida Music Educator Association.
