    Dear Parents,

Welcome to First Gade at Hawks Rise!  My name is Ms. Penny Piper and I will be teaching first grade this year.  This is my 27th year as a teacher in Leon County Schools and my 16th year here at Hawks Rise.  I have taught Pre-K, kindergarten, and first grade and I am really excited about teaching first grade again this year!  I graduated from Florida State University with a master's degree in Early Childhood Special Education and a minor in child psychology. I have teaching certifications in both Early Childhood Education and Exceptional Student Education.

I moved to Tallahassee in 1988 to come to FSU and I never left! I have two sons: Tyler, 19 and Gavin, 15. Tyler is currently in the Army Reserves completing his full time training to be a radiology specialist.  He will be back in Tallahassee in September after he completes his full time training and will be starting FSU in January.  Gavin is a sophomore at Chiles High School.

I am also really excited about the opportunity to co-teach with Mrs. Caitlin Grampa this year.  We are both dually certified in Elementary Education and Exceptional Student Education.  Having two certified teachers in the classroom will give us the opportunity to reach every student and provide the individualized instruction needed at every level.  We will be able to provide lots of enrichment and remediation as necessary.

Teaching young kids is my passion and one of my most important goals this year will be to instill in your child the LOVE of learning and reading.  It will also be my mission to develop your child's belief in his or her own abilities to achieve, and to feel pride in his/her successes and hard work. Your involvement, interest, and enthusiasm will help make this a wonderful year of growth for your child.  I am so excited about having a fantastic year in first grade!

    Sincerely,

    Ms. Piper
