Supplies: Please see our first grade supply list. It is helpful if all supplies are brought to school during orientation. If you cannot do this, please send supplies in on the first day of school.
Name Tags: Your child will be given a name badge for the first week of school. Please be sure to have your child wear it to school everyday for the entire first week. Thanks!
Start and Dismissal Times: School begins at 8:30 AM The first bell will ring at 8:25 AM The late bell rings at 8:30 AM. Dismissal is at 2:50 PM. Before and after school care is available with our EDEP program.
Homework: Weekly homework is assigned to develop responsibility, good work habits, and to reinforce skills learned at school. Your child will also be assigned nightly reading that will help build fluency, comprehension, and decoding skills. More specific homework information to come!
Backpack Folders: Classwork will be sent home in a green folder every Friday. Work should be reviewed and kept at home. There will also be important documents in the folder that may require your signature. This folder must come to school everyday with your child.
Absences: If your child is sick and misses a day of school, please send a written note explaining the absence. You may also e-mail a note. All attendance issues with be sent to the registrar. Teachers cannot excuse an absence. You can read more about the attendance policy in Gilchrist’s handbook.
Snacks: We will have a designated snack time each day. We will begin snack time on the first day of school. Please be sure to send a nutritious snack for your child. No chips, candy, or sugary drinks will be allowed during snack time.
Lunch: Lunch may be purchased by the day, week, or month. Weekly or monthly purchases are best. Each child will be assigned a pin number to use in the cafeteria. Please help your child memorize his/her number.
Birthday Treats and Invitations: We would love to help your child celebrate his/her birthday at school. You are welcome to bring in a simple treat to share with the class. Please schedule it with us ahead of time. We will share the treat during lunch. Invitations to a birthday party may be passed out in class, as long as there is one for every student.
Conferences: You will sign-up for a parent-teacher conference at Open House. The conference will be held before the end of the first nine week period.
Communication: The best way to communicate with us is through e-mail (iottn@leonschools.net or reillym@leonschools.net). However, please feel free to call us too. We will also send home a weekly newsletter to help keep you informed of our classroom activities. Please know that the line of communication is always open!
Student Pick-Up: Occasionally, there may be a change in the way your child goes home. All changes must be submitted in writing. Please do not e-mail us a pick-up change. If an emergency arises, call the front office with the change before 1 PM. You must sign your child out in the front office if you are picking her/him up early.
Spirit Day: At Gilchrist, every Friday is “Spirit Day.” Please send your child to school dressed in a Gilchrist shirt. If your child does not have a Gilchrist shirt, s/he can wear red to show her/his school spirit. Gilchrist apparel is available for purchase through our PTO,
